Tea: Origins, Flavors and Health Benefits

How many times do we just want to drink tea after a heavy meal, but are then bombarded with all the various tea flavors that we get lost.
Here are all the answers:

What you should always remember is that there are only four types of tea.
1) Black tea
2) Green tea
3) White tea
4) Oolong tea

All these are made from the leaves of the same plant, camellia sinensis, also known as the tea plant. Other herbal infusions such as chamomile tea, ginger tea or red tea made of rooibos leaves are disqualified as types of tea since the tea plant is not involved in their making. The difference between the four tea variations lies in the process of making them. In addition, each type of tea has another flavor and various health benefits.

1) Black Tea
The strong flavored burnt Sienna colored hot beverage is the most popular type of tea in the West. Either served with a squeeze of lemon or added milk and a cube of sugar, the cup of black tea is part of daily tea ceremonies that take place worldwide. Black tea is made of heavily oxidized camellia sinensis leaves. When served plain, it contains no calories, carbohydrates, or fats. A cup of black tea contains more caffeine than any other types of tea but less than in any cup of coffee.

2) Green Tea
The lightly oxidized tea has been popular in China, Japan and Korea for centuries. Recently, rumors on its health benefits increased its popularity in the West as well. It has been proven that drinking green tea can lower cholesterol, prevent cancer, increase metabolic rates and be helpful in variety of other conditions and illnesses. The green tea is lightly oxidized, dried, but not fermented. It is usually served plain, without sugar or milk. Since some of the green tea variants taste a bit bitter, it should be brewed in lower temperature than the boiling point.

3) White Tea
White tea is rarer and more expensive than the other types of teas mentioned above. Originated in the Fujian province of china, the white tea is made of young camellia sinensis leaves, which go through a long process of steaming or frying, inactivate fermenting and drying. Since the leaves are harvested while the buds are still covered by white hair, it is called white tea. White tea has the most delicate, sweet taste than the other types of tea. Moreover, it contains the smallest amount of caffeine and the largest amount of antioxidant that help prevent cancer.

4) Oolong Tea
The traditional Chinese tea is the common companion of Chinese foods such as dim sum and chop suey in American Chinese restaurants. The oolong tea, black dragon in Chinese, got its name after its long, dark distinguished leaves that look like wild black dragons when brewed. The unique taste of the oolong tea is achieved by a long process that includes sun drying of the camellia sinensis leaves, light oxidization, cooling and drying processes. The result is a lighter flavor than the popular black tea and stronger than the delicate green tea.

Lets Celebrate Dad!

This weekend we celebrate those men that have spent their days coaching, painting, playing football, helping on science projects, teaching how to drive, traveling, growing, but especially making memories that will last a lifetime.

For over 100 years now, the third Sunday of June has been set aside as a day to celebrate the fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, brothers, and father figures in our lives.

So how did the concept of Father’s Day arise?

Well, many accredit Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd, who in 1910 wanted to thank her father for raising her and her five siblings single-handedly after her mom passed away. However, talks about making a day designated for honoring dads as a National Holiday did not arise until 1924, when President Calvin Coolidge became the first president to show support for the idea of Father’s Day. But, it was actually President Lyndon B. Johnson who signed a presidential proclamation and declared the third Sunday of every June the National Holiday of Father’s Day in 1966.

The truth is that every Dads is unique, from their sense of humor to their personalities, but they all are role models, teachers, and even shoulders to cry on  for each of the children they raise and love. Each father leaves an imprint on his child or children’s lives, giving them values, education and imparting an everlasting influence as those children grow up and enter adulthood.

Give your Dad not just the joy of tea but the gift of relaxation and a chance to build more memories together around a strong cup of tea, just like their personality!

Visit our website at www.hyleyteaonline.com and get 10% off all purchases $40 or more and always fast and free shipping in the USA when you buy 2 items or more.

Wishing all fathers a fantastic Father’s Day from everyone at Hyleys!

Tea Varieties and their Unique Nutritious Characteristics

Camellia sinensis, an exotic sounding name for a botanical plant that is very commonly used daily worldwide. It can be green, black, or white. It can be consumed hot or iced. Some like it sweet, and some like it bitter. It can even be infused with many different types of flowers and herbs….Any guesses? If you guessed TEA, you are correct! Just like the grapes that are used to produce distinctive fine wines, the flavors and types of teas are dependent on weather conditions in the regions to which the Camellia sinensis plant is native. Other factors influencing the pedigrees of tea flavors are varying soil types, the geographic location of tea plantations and even the processing of the tea itself. However, there are 4 inherently different tea types, each with their own distinct health benefits:

1) Black tea is the most popular tea in the West, accounting for about 70% of the world’s tea consumption. Black tea is the result of a 6-hour oxidation process of the Camellia sinensis leaves. On its own, it is calorie, carbohydrate and fat-free, making it a healthy alternative to water. It also contains the highest caffeine percentage of all the tea types, though less than a cup of coffee. In many cultures, black tea is consumed with the addition of a slice of lemon, or even with milk and sugar.

2) Green tea has maintained its popularity in China, Japan, and Korea for centuries; however, due to the attention it has gotten recently for all its health benefits, green tea has also quickly gained popularity in the West. Unlike black tea, green tea is not oxidized or fermented but lightly dried. The processing of green tea involves only the rolling and heating of the freshly harvested leaves. Green tea is believed to have medicinal properties such as lowing cholesterol, preventing cancer, and increasing metabolism, thus promoting weight loss. Culturally, it is typically served without milk or sugar. *FUN TIP: because green tea has a slightly bitter taste, it should be brewed in lower temperature than the boiling point of water.

3) White tea is perhaps the most exclusive of all the teas- as it is rarer and more expensive. It originates from the Fujian province of China and is produced from young Camellia sinensis leaves. The leaves are harvested when the buds are still covered by white hair (thus the name “white tea”) and then the leaves go through a lengthy process of steaming. White tea has a natural sweet taste and the smallest amount of caffeine of all the teas.

4) Oolong Tea is the least popular of all the tea types, accounting for just about 3% of the world’s tea consumption. However, due to its fruity and flowery aroma and delicate taste, oolong tea has been dubbed the “champagne of teas” by tea connoisseurs. The processing of Oolong tea requires the drying of leaves, lightly oxidizing them, then cooling and drying. The flavors achieved are therefore lighter than black tea, stronger than green tea, with the caffeine content falling somewhere between the two as well.

Whether you prefer the robust and deep flavors of black tea or the earthy flavor of green tea with all its health benefits, there is certainly a tea flavor for everyone!

HYLEYS CELEBRATES TEACHERS

It’s probably been a while since you were last at school but you´ll likely never forget about of the teachers that made a make in your life. They left us with great lessons, some because they introduced the subject they were teaching to you with love and passion, and others might have given you a lesson beyond the subject, perhaps a lesson of love, commitment and values.
Did you know that political and educational leaders began discussions for a day to honor teachers in 1944?  In 1953, Eleanor Roosevelt persuaded the 81st Congress to proclaim National Teachers’ Day.   It wasn’t until 1985 when the National PTA established Teacher Appreciation Week as the first full week of May.
This is why through generations Teacher`s Appreciation Day is celebrated with great joy. There is always  a small but meaningful way to honor the teachers we revere and make them know how grateful we are for all their lasting contributions to our lives.
We all know, whether we are parents or not, how critical the role of a teacher is in every child’s life. Teachers help to develop not only good leaders and future governors or presidents of nations , but also people of ethics and honor with good values and respect.
Teaching requires not only understanding but passion, patience, love and a vow to be a great educator. Teachers are kind, hard-working, and unique. All of them are special as they have a very huge social responsibility once they decide to become a guide in our children’s lives. Lets thank them and remember that teachers are  part of who we have become as adults today.
At Hyleys we understand this and would like to honor all teachers for their hard work and dedication by creating a “Teacher Appreciation Sale”.  From now until June 7th enjoy up to 20% off on orders $40 or more. Please use code TEACHER17 at checkout.

Wishing all Mothers around the world a wonderful and very special Mother’s Day!
